“when life is snuffed out the minute people find out it is a girl” – Nita Ambani

Poem

“when life is snuffed out the minute people find out it is a girl” – Nita Ambani

Too close to the sun. The wing
that slacks in the belly
that grows, unreflected
in womb water.

Still, there is flight, a spine
that flowers, and feet
pressing downwards
in womb-dark.

She might have been
Icarus. The sky they build her
is hard with wires
the searing lights

her mouth swells
to diminish. But too small,
her mouth-bubbles
are no more the size
of a half-pear – body open
they pull, loose and
wet as a flower –
Her mother
is looking downwards into a dream.
Listening she might hear
the choking sparks,
the salted breath

sucking inwards all
gentle life –
Outside, air swoons
as lovers do with the sound
a little girl makes
when she burns.
